“Do you play?” he asked me at the 1996 LHJF.
“Yes, sir, but I’m not very good.” I admitted.
“Why not?” he chuckled.
“I’m just not very good.”
“You don’t practice enough,” he smiled.
“You’re right, sir. I don’t. Because I’m not very good.”
“It takes work,” he reassured me. “You have to practice your instrument until you can’t hold it anymore. And then you know what happens?”
“No, sir. What happens.”
“You will never be able to let it go. Then, you’ll be good. Keep at it.”
“Thank you, sir.”

Incredibly smart and hilarious. Great voice and incredibly talented musician. He doesn’t know it, but he’s a constant source of encouragement. He helps me push myself. Had he not, I wouldn’t be kayaking, and fishing him out of the water.
